Solo 1

Rhythms, Songs, Fantasies

A program in two contrasting parts, built around two masterpieces of the 20th century. On the one hand, ‘Nocturnal’ by British composer Benjamin Britten, a work composed as a metaphor of sleep and a deep longing for inner piece, inspired on music of Renaissance composer John Dowland. On the other, ‘Sonata op. 47’, Argentinean Alberto Ginastera’s stunning showpiece for guitar, inspired on rhythms and melodies of his country’s folklore, next to works by one of the icons of Mexican classical music, Manuel M. Ponce, who also found his guiding light in his roots and on trends of his time.

Music from Latin America and Spain

The cultural mixture Spain caused during colonial times in Latin America is endless and complex. This blend is nowhere better expressed than in the music of a region that throughout three centuries played Spanish and local melodies interwoven with African rhythms, and bound by European structures. The results are inexhaustible and wonderful.
